HISTORY
Regional Power Inc. (“Regional”) is a
company that has been in the business of developing and operating “small hydro”
electric generating facilities since 1985.
To date, Regional has developed 6 generating facilities with a total generating
capacity of 36 MW. Three of these facilities (Wawatay, Sechelt Creek and Hluey
Lakes) were “greenfield projects” where Regional acquired the sites, designed
the project, contracted for the sale of the electricity, permitted the project,
built and commissioned the facilities, and continues to operate the facilities.
The Wawatay facility (13.5 MW) is located on the Black River in northern
Ontario, near the Town of Marathon on the north shore of Lake Superior. The Sechelt Creek facility (16 MW) is located in southern British Columbia about 30
kilometers northeast of the Town of Sechelt and 70 kilometers northwest of
Vancouver. The Hluey Lakes facility (3 MW) is a remote, off-grid, off diesel
facility in northern British Columbia near the town of Dease Lake.
The other 3 facilities which Regional has completed are three small generating
facilities, with an aggregate generating capacity of 3.5 MW, located near the
Town of Dryden in north western Ontario. These facilities were built by the
local paper mill in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Regional acquired the facilities in
1985 and rehabilitated them and connected them to Ontario Hydro’s rural grid in
the area. At the time, this was the first synchronous interconnection on a rural
distribution system in Ontario.
Currently, Regional has 8 other hydroelectric projects at various stages of
development. The aggregate generating capacity of these projects will be over
300MW, depending on contracting terms, development schedules and permitting
requirements. Four of these projects are located in British Columbia (Bear
Creek, Long Lake, Ucona River and Ryan River), two are located in Quebec (Anglier
and Riviere aux Rochés) and two are located in Northern Ontario (Gitchi Animki
Bizhig and Gitchi Animki Niizh).
All of the plants currently operated by Regional are Eco Logo certified –
Environment Canada’s Terra Choice Program. In terms of our projects under
development, our objective is to have them all certified.
